June 3, 2004--With the release of his new Cd, "Back to the Swamp", Muscle Shoals music veteran, Russell Gulley has re-vitalizd his recording career after over two decades of silence. His last commercial recording was released in 1980 with the MSS/Capitol recording act, Jackson Highway, a southern rock group nurtured by Jimmy Johnson and David Hood of the Muscle Shoals Sound Recording Studios, the home of the Swampers, the group immortalized by Lynyrd Skynrd in the southern classic, Sweet Home Alabama. Gulley's current release is a return to the roots of the music that first influenced him, a mix of Americana that blends blues, soul, gospel, country, and rock and roll.
To celebrate the release of his current Cd, Gulley is appearing at regional festivals such as The Bessie Smith Strut at the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga, Tennessee on June 14th, and on the Alabama Sampler Stage, June 20th at Birmingham, Alabama's City Stages Festival. The initial response to the Cd, as well as,these dates and others at regional venues that support roots, traditional, and original music have encouraged Russell to return to performing on a perminent basis.
During his hiatus from recording, Russell has continued to be involved in his first love of songwriting and has had several recent "cuts" of his songs by such artists as Johnny Neel, former Allman Brothers band member, The Beatdaddys, a Malaco/Waldoxy recording group, and most recently, a song by Carl Weathersby, the heir apparent to blues legend, Albert King.
"Back to the Swamp" features six Gulley originals among some songs from the heart of Muscle Shoals, songs written by friends that have had a major impact on the recording industry there. " I'm striving to contribute to that tradition,"said Russell in a recent interview," the tradition of song writing that is non-pretentsious, the tradition that truely has given Muscle Shoals it's soul".
