Ballston Spa, NY June 23, 2003 -- Saratoga Concepts (Ballston Spa, NY) today announced that it has formed a new independent company, Carbon Concept, to focus on the design and manufacture of high quality carbon fiber automotive parts and appearance accessories for the booming sports compact market. Saratoga Concepts is a design, development and prototyping company for fiberglass and composite products. Carbon Concept parts are available online at www.carbonconcept.com and through select dealers.
"The sports compact market is growing quickly and demand for premium appearance accessories crafted of carbon fiber has outstripped the available supply," said Bruce G. Carlton, president of Saratoga Concept and a partner in Carbon Concept. "We bring to the market the specialized molding and design techniques and materials necessary to create high quality parts."
High quality parts start with closed molds and Resin Transfer Molding (RTM.) When a part is molded in a closed mold and heat cured it takes the exact shape of the mold. The resin is an epoxy which is very stable under heat, unlike polyester which tends to warp and change shape upon exposure to heat. RTM guarantees that no unsightly air bubbles mar the high luster finish inherent in carbon fiber products. Parts are cured at a high temperature to ensure heat stability -- no warping after the parts are installed on a vehicle. RTM products are finished with an automotive clear coat which is UV protected for a durable and lasting shine which doesn't dull with age.
Larger parts, such as hoods, require a different method, called vacuum bag molding. Vacuum bag molding ensures a void-free product as well as making the part lighter and stronger. Vinyl ester resin is used instead of polyester resin for vacuum bag molding because it has a lower shrinkage rate and is more resistant to heat distortion. The final product is not subject to post installation warping.
Other signs of quality that customers look for include: orientation of the weave of the cloth to avoid uneven portions; high quality finish of the clear coat or clear gel coat; an exacting fit to the car, in contour, with stock gaps along the edges; even resin thickness in high contour areas; and finished edges with a molded radius edge, just like factory parts.
Early customers are impressed with the quality and attention to detail found in Carbon Concept parts. "Fit and finish are very important to our customers," continued Carlton. "For example, the hood has a full inner panel, the same as stock hoods, with all necessary weather strip and accessory holes pre-drilled. The hinge and latch attachment points are reinforced with Kevlar." The owner of a Subaru WRX who has his car completely outfitted with Carbon Concept's hood, gauge pod, vent trim rings, hood and hood scoop, as well as covers for the fuse box, brake controller, cold air intake and serpentine belt has won several "First in Class" awards at North East area car shows.
